The gallery's recent £35 million transformation has enabled the collection to be presented to visitors in imaginative new ways. Highlights include outstanding pre-Raphaelite paintings, craft and design and early 20thC British art. Exciting exhibitions programme, there is a wide range of events, from talks and tours to hands-on activities for both children and adults. Superb visitor facilities include 2 cafes, large shop and full disabled access. On each floor of the venue, there is an innovative special interest gallery which introduces you to particular aspects of the city's collection. All of these unique galleries have been designed by top British exhibition designers. The Clore Interactive Gallery is a lively new space for children 5-12 years old and their familes. A combination of real artworks and exciting hands-on activities will open young people's eyes and minds to art. Add dialogue to an animated film, morph your face with mythical creatures or listen to spooky stories told by a figure that 'comes alive' from a 19th-century painting. The Gallery of Craft and Design is one of the visual and architectural highlights of the new Manchester Art Gallery. This vast high-ceilinged room was once a theatre and provides the perfect backdrop for our collection. Around 1,300 artworks are displayed in a thematic way, including ceramics, glass, metalwork, furniture, textiles, toys and armour. The oldest object dates from around 1000BC and the most recent was made in 2002. Visitors can find out more about British crafts and craftspeople via Photostore, the Craft Council's easy-to-use visual database, which is installed in the Gallery of Craft and Design..... |
